How to spot a scam e-commerce order

Written by ncron on August 15, 2009 – 8:05 am -

Hi everyone,

At Medical Delivered we take security seriously and employ the best technologies available to prevent hacking and protect our customers.  The purpose of this post is to help other e-commerce site owners and suppliers to identify and protect themselves against one of the most common scam orders.

THE DIFFERENT BILLING AND SHIPPING ADDRESS

As website owners we need to offer our customers the ability to have different billing and shipping addresses for legitimate reasons.  For example, I could be purchasing supplies for an elderly parent who does not live in the same house.  In this case it is perfect legitimate to have the credit card billed to my address but ship the goods directly to another address.   Scammers use this standard use case and exploit it to try to extract goods with stolen credit cards.  As e-commerce site owners we see this A LOT.

Here are some quick guidelines for spotting scam orders:

1.  The billing and shipping address will not match

2.  The “customer” will be a first time buyer

3.  The delivery address will most likely be a shared office space (easier for the scammer to blend in)

4.  The “Customer”, “Billing” and “Shipping” names will tpyically all be different

5.  The items purchased will have some resale value or “black” market.   (e-mail me and I will tell you what the item is for Medical Supplies)

6.  The phone number provided will typically be fake or in some cases connect you to the scammer themselves.

When you see an order that meets some or all of these conditions BE CAREFUL!  We all don’t like chargebacks (if your a site owner you know what these are).

We call typically work to locate  a phone number associated to the billing address and call the house.  Next we call the shipping address and notify the office manager of the crimes taking place from their building.  Then we contact the local authorities and attempt to setup a “delivery” to catch the criminal in the act.   And of course we cancel the transaction and work to notify the credit card owner that their card has been stolen.

The steps above may seem obvious (we do other things as well that I won’t share) but we are surprised to hear from other site owners that these steps are sometimes not followed.

So please scammers, don’t waste your time.   You will not get your items and if we get our way you will get a nice little stay in jail.

Should You Rent or Purchase Medical Equipment Supplies?

Written by ncron on March 13, 2009 – 7:09 am -

Author: Jane Worthington

Medical equipment is expensive whether you are an individual who needs a wheelchair or you are a hospital administrator who needs to purchase several new electrocardiogram (EKG) machines. These items are expensive for a reason. They need to be durable and provide accurate care at all times. However, whether you decide to rent or purchase medical equipment supplies depends completely on how long you will need the piece of equipment and what will be the most economical choice for you at that particular time.

Leasing medical equipment is a business in which many medical equipment retailers also specialize. Most medical supplies stores specialize in leasing equipment to professional hospitals and clinics but there are several companies, such as Care Medical Equipment, that rent single pieces of equipment to individuals. Most people take advantage of these services when they go on vacation. It is incredibly convenient to be able to rent a power wheel chair or a respiratory machine and have it delivered to the hotel the day you arrive. No longer do people have to stay home when their family travels because they can have the care they need wherever they go!

Health clinics that are just opening and small medical practices are often the businesses that are the most interested in leasing pieces of medical equipment. There are new medical machines coming out every year, whether it’s hospital or home medical equipment. Researchers and technicians are hard at work designing more accurate machines that can help diagnose and treat different conditions. It is impossible for medical facilities to buy the latest model or machine every year because the costs are just too high. Leasing, however, is always an option. If there is a machine that is perfect for your practice, leasing will allow you to use the machine without having to pay the high purchase costs.

The best news about leasing is that you only need to pay the depreciation value of the machine during the time that you have it. Once your lease is up, you can always re-lease the machine or you can purchase it for a much lower price! Most people believe purchasing items is the best way to go, but leasing is a very viable option. As long as you do your research, you should be able to discover the best option for you.

Here are some general guidelines:

  • The product must meet our quality standards

If you know of a product, distributor, or manufacturer who meets this criteria please call our new products hot line at 1-866-358-6453 ext 2 or respond to this blog posting.
